(Can't Get No) Satisfaction
This video should be seen in a continuous loop. I restructured the original scene in order to pose my own questions about Superman. What if he and Clark Kent weren't the same person but were instead each other's fantasy or lovers? Could the telephone booth be the place of this meeting? If they are the same person, what is the real role of an alter ego? Is it masturbatory? If Superman goes down on Clark Kent it gives them realness through having vices and sexuality. What does it mean when our heroes become human? Does it change their triumphs and add the possibility of failures? What happens when we reinterpret the media as presented to us?
Swallow
This video came about along with my body fluids videos. This comes from that and from the mirroring I was doing before like in M(y)tosis or Plato's Cave. I mirrored my neck for this and create an interesting torso shape.
Playing Peter (part 1)
This work is about gender being a performance much in the same way that Judith Butler describes it in her writings. I believe we are born into this assigned gender based on our biology but that we can subvert this. Some people do for performance (drag) and others in life. I'm all about embodying this journey of life and those spaces in between in order to think about things beyond the binary categories presented to us.
Be sure to see all the parts to get the complete experience.
Excerpt from Cuttings
This is layering of public domain footage from prelinger archives. It again asks what happens to meaning when things are layered and recontextualized .
Excerpt from Sketches in Walking
This video is about using walking as a starting point to question meaning and context. I am questioning these things much in the way we do with language. I used motion-activated cameras to capture the footage and grouped the clips into four random groups. I am interested in the relationships created by the groupings and context created along with the use of repetition in this project. I am also interested in the extension of my body and the private made public.
Plato's Cave
This video is part of my research as a graduate student in New Media. It shows a figure endlessly looking back and forth at itself and its shadow. In viewing the piece, the audience ironically mirrors the same behavior. In this way, this piece alludes to the metaphor it is titled after and its a manipulation of that philosophy.
Beast Breast: Grammatical Gender
I am interested in the points of failure or slippage in language. I used video rather than the neon of Nauman or Kosuth. This video is about the assumptions of gender we have in language even though they are not assigned in English. Beast being strong and manly but fictional. Breast being of the body, soft and female. When women can be beasts and men have breasts.
M(y)tosis
This video investigates the similarities in the division of cells and turning ones head filtered through video editing software. Do we see that which we are? Are there connections between cell replication and video replication?
Longing
This video is documentation of a performance. This artwork itself deals with the displacement of looking for a stand-in or substitute for a person when they are absent. We are in a long term but currently long-distance relationship. I used an everyday object that she left at my house to construct a portrait of Jenn. Later, I did a similar process to make one of myself.
